More than a year and a half into the pandemic, we live the new normal. As we take stock of the movements in the job market, not everything is as bleak as was assumed during the initial days of the pandemic. We have come a long way from the days of layoffs, hiring freezes, and a struggling economy. As the world has discovered new ways to move forward, so does the job market. Doors are wide open for new talents with new jobs created.
“Talent is something that organizations cannot do without. Organizations are not brick and mortar,” says Ms. Bhawana Dhawan, head, HR operations of the South Asia region at Pladis Global.
The pandemic hastened the growth of sectors like pharma and healthcare. The Healthcare industry witnessed the mushrooming of almost 3000 crore companies in no time. People with medical backgrounds saw the windfall as most of them found themselves as sales heads of pharma companies. Professionals with niche knowledge were in demand like never before.
The biggest takeaway of the pandemic is the immense possibility that remote working offered and embraced by diversity workforce. Pandemic opened the door to a globalized job market. The women, who vanished from the workforce owing to family obligations, had the golden opportunity to rejoin. Remote working made multi-tasking easier.
Digitalization has made the recruitment process faster as done in the comfort of one’s house. We are looking to a future where the work culture will adopt the hybrid model. 50% will be working remotely, and 50% will be going to the office. As the industry experts predict remote working is here to stay.
Some organisations have taken the extra mile to ensure seamless work of remotely working employees, like setting up workstations in houses. New job roles catering to the needs of the changing work environment are created. “In HR, there is a new vertical created called people and experience,” adds Ms. Bhawana Dhawan.
The newer positions created due to the digital marketing boom turned to be a boon for diverse candidates. With client meetings conducted online, the number of women opting for sales is increasing. Women no more shy away from being the delivery person.
“Yakult is an excellent example. All their delivery people are female. People scenarios are changing, and people are evolved and agile to do various kinds of things,” says Ms. Dhawan.
Fighting a pandemic means exploring ways of survival. We have come so far, and it is only going to get better.
